1. The Philosophy of "One Glance"
Developed in the late 1930s by Goichi Hosoda, a Japanese journalist, "Ichimoku Kinko Hyo" translates to "One glance equilibrium chart."
Unlike Western indicators that usually show only one dimension (like RSI for momentum or MA for trend), Ichimoku is a standalone, robust system. It visualizes the past, present, and future on a single chart, predicting dynamic Support and Resistance based on price equilibrium rather than closing prices. (This system relies on a deep understanding of Market States).
2. Anatomy of the 5 Lines
1. Tenkan-Sen (Conversion Line)
Calculated as (Highest High + Lowest Low) / 2 over the past 9 periods. It acts as a fast-moving signal line, reflecting short-term momentum.
2. Kijun-Sen (Base Line)
Calculated over 26 periods. It represents the medium-term trend and acts as a strong dynamic Support/Resistance level for pullbacks.
3. Chikou Span (Lagging Span)
The current closing price shifted backwards by 26 periods. This is the ultimate "Trend Confirmation" tool. If Chikou is above historical price, the trend is definitively bullish.
3. The Kumo (Cloud) Breakout
The Kumo, or Cloud, is formed by Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B, projected 26 periods into the future. It is the core of the Ichimoku system, visually representing Market States and volatility boundaries.
Trading the Cloud:
- Price above the Cloud: The trend is Bullish. The Cloud acts as dynamic Support. Only look for Buy signals.
- Price below the Cloud: The trend is Bearish. The Cloud acts as dynamic Resistance. Only look for Sell signals.
- Price inside the Cloud: Indecision (Zone of Noise). Institutions are fighting. Do Not Trade. Wait for a clear Breakout.
- Cloud Thickness: A thick cloud indicates strong support/resistance that is hard to pierce. A thin cloud indicates weak boundaries prone to breakouts.
4. TK Cross & Ultimate Confirmation
The primary entry signal in Ichimoku is the TK Cross (Tenkan-Sen crossing the Kijun-Sen). However, executing raw crossovers leads to fakeouts. You must align it with the Rule of Confluence (similar to the principles of Signal Filters):
The Ideal Golden Cross Entry:
- The Signal: Tenkan-Sen crosses ABOVE the Kijun-Sen.
- The Context: The Cross happens ABOVE the Kumo (Cloud), indicating it aligns with the major bullish trend.
- The Confirmation: The Chikou Span (Lagging line) is trading freely in open space ABOVE the candlesticks from 26 periods ago.
* When all 3 elements align, you have a high-probability institutional setup.
